Schooligans!

The Crabtree Curse. It's real. Never heard of it? Well you probably aren't a Crabtree then. Every once and a while, just when things are going great, it sneaks up on us Crabtrees.

As you may or may not know, yesterday was The Monkey's first day of Kindergarten. The night before, she wanted to go to bed at 7. She woke up the next day at 6:30 am bursting with excitement, thinking that it was already time to catch the bus. I assured her that we had plenty of time, and we didn't need to leave the house until 8:10 to get the bus at 8:17. Do you see where this is going? Yeah. We missed the bus on her FIRST DAY of school EVER. I think the worst part is we were almost there and the driver definitely saw us running up the sidewalk. I ended up chauffeuring her to the school in her own private 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer (complete with power windows and 16" rims, swanky!). Of course, we arrived right behind the bus. As I was talking to the driver about giving me a more accurate departure time, my sunglasses fell off of my head and halfway under the bus. Hell no I didn't wait until she drove off, I couldn't risk them getting run over. I paid $5 whole dollars for them at Target. That's like 20 whole minutes of work I put towards buying them. Nope. I crawled under the bus in front of the teachers and students to get them back. I'm such a good example to my children! Definitely Parent of the Year material.

Whew, what a day. I really can't believe that I am the mother of a child in school. I'm also completely new to the whole packing lunch routine, so I've been trying to find ways to make it healthy, inexpensive, and fun at the same time. Yesterday I made her star-shaped peanut butter sandwiches, which she loved. Today she had penguins. When I showed her today's sandwiches she replied with, "How cool are you!?" Which I guess means I'm really cool. If you have some awesome lunchbox ides please share!
